Niger is a state in the North Central region of Nigeria. It is the largest state in the country by area. The state capital is Minna. Other major cities are Bida, Kontagora and Suleja.

Niger state was formed in 1976 when the then North-Western State was divided into Niger State and Sokoto State.

Number of Local Government Areas: The state has 25 Local Government Areas, each headed by a local government chairman. They are divided into districts, each with a district head while village heads head villages.
