In Nigeria’s federal system, governance is divided into three levels: Federal, State, and Local. While much focus is often placed on the Federal and State governments, the Local Government—the closest to the people—is frequently overlooked. The #myLGA Project is here to change that.
As an initiative of EiE Nigeria, #myLGA aims to transform how local governance operates in Nigeria. By empowering citizens and fostering collaboration between communities and their local governments, we’re working to ensure that every Nigerian can hold their local leaders accountable and enjoy effective service delivery.
Program Goal: A Nigeria where local governance is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of its people.
Program Objective: To strengthen the capacity of citizens to advance government accountability at the local government level and promote transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local government.
Our Approach
- Empower Citizens: We educate Nigerians about the public services available to them, the quality of service they should expect, and how to advocate for better services or report deficiencies through local media platforms and community forums like town hall meetings.
- Foster Collaboration: We build partnerships with local government officials, traditional and religious leaders, market leaders, youth and women leaders, Persons with Disabilities and community based organizations to foster a governance system that truly serves the people through the #OfficeOfTheCitizen (#OOTC) HelpDesks.
- Build Demand for Accountability: We equip citizens with the knowledge and tools they need to hold their local governments accountable, ensuring that public services are delivered effectively.
Our Impact
Since phase 2 commenced in December 2023, the #myLGA Project has made significant strides:
- 54 #OOTC Champions Trained: Local champions have been trained and deployed across 6 states, representing all 3 senatorial districts in each state.
- 17 #OOTC HelpDesks Established and counting: Despite challenges, we’ve successfully launched 17 HelpDesks with Desk Officers ready to serve their communities. We expect these numbers to go up and we’ll be unveiling our Desk Officers soon!
- Engaged Stakeholders: Through advocacy visits, we’ve engaged local government leaders, state representatives, traditional and religious leaders, and other key stakeholders to secure their support for the project.
