Domestic Violence In Lafia: Effect and Recommendations
– Shafa Shuaibu Muhammad
Introduction
Domestic Violence, also known as domestic abuse or intimidation, constitutes a pattern of behavior used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. While not a new issue, the alarming rise in cases of domestic violence, particularly perpetrated by males against their female partners, poses significant concerns. Intolerance is identified as a primary cause, resulting in a range of damaging effects, including physical, emotional, and psychological harm. Notable cases, such as that of Maryam Sanda, underscore the severity of the issue in Lafia and its environs.
Body
The capital of Nasarawa state, Lafia, has seen a surge in domestic violence cases, leading to an overload of courts, human rights offices, and security operatives dealing with approximately 100 cases on average. These cases often culminate in marriage dissolution or separation as a means to restore peace. Two prominent cases in 2021, one involving a fatal attack in Azuba Bashayi and another featuring a university lecturer caught on video abusing a young woman, exemplify the urgency of addressing domestic violence.
The consequences of domestic violence are profound, causing physical, emotional, and psychological damage to victims. Visible injuries such as bruises, burns, dislocations, and tears leading to stitches leave lasting scars. Some effects, however, are internal and everlasting, posing greater dangers than physical injuries. When domestic violence occurs within marriages, separation or dissolution becomes a common resolution, impacting children who may grow up in broken homes devoid of parental love.
Several factors contribute to domestic violence, with cultural and religious practices playing a significant role. Some practices, inconsistent with natural justice and good conscience, persist to the detriment of certain individuals. Intolerance is identified as another key cause, with an alarming increase in its prevalence within families. The weak judicial system further exacerbates the issue, necessitating stronger measures to curb this disturbing trend.
Call to Action
Addressing domestic violence requires multifaceted approaches. Cultures and practices contrary to natural justice, equity, and good conscience should be discontinued. Robust campaigns and educational initiatives on domestic violence and tolerance are imperative, involving government bodies, individuals, civil society organizations, and concerned parastatals. Strengthening the judicial system is crucial, ensuring prompt punishment for offenders and making judgments public to serve as a deterrent. Victims are encouraged to report cases promptly to relevant authorities, as many domestic violence instances constitute criminal offences, involving the police, civil defense, and human rights organizations in the process.
Conclusion
In conclusion, combating domestic violence demands a united effort across society. By discontinuing harmful cultural practices, implementing awareness campaigns, and enhancing education, we pave the way for change. Collaboration among government, civil society, and individuals is key. Strengthening the judicial system for swift punishment and encouraging victims to report cases promptly are vital steps. Together, we strive for a society built on respect and empathy, breaking the cycle of abuse for a safer future.
